Culture at Telstra

8.1
8.1 rating for Culture, based on 71 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
Very Supportive of Graduates. Some people that have been with the company are long time are disgruntled over insecurity of their jobs.
Graduate, Sydney - 22 Jan 2020
Telstra is a very flexible working environment. You are encouraged to be able to work from almost anywhere providing the work that you do can be completely on a laptop. There is very, very little over-time, and lots of opportunity to move around into different teams. The culture is very dependant on the team that you're in and often is driven by the leadership. From all the teams that I have been in the culture, teamwork and socialising have all been great. From morning coffee runs, to afternoon boardgames or playing pool.

Amongst grads, you'll have a good group of friends as long as you make the effort. Team culture depends on what team you are in, predominately co-located teams are obviously more social than split / with offshore teams. Everyone enjoys a coffee run. Company-wide though culture is suffering a little bit because everything is very tight at the moment, not a lot of individual initiative is rewarded at the moment and business units rival other business units because there's a fight for funding.

My immediate team is fantastic. The positive culture we have created has enabled me to love my job and look forward to work. Overall at Telstra, you'll find similar experiences. Unfortunately, and inevitably, no matter where you go there will be the odd sour experience. The size of Telstra though means there will always be opportunities to find others whom you can connect with. I've been fortunate to work with great people, even when addressing on an ad-hoc request with someone in a completely different area!

In the larger offices there is a great social culture which makes networking really easy. However, in the smaller offices there is a lot of separation.

The team that I am in currently are an absolute pleasure to work with. There is great level respect for one and other. It is easy to bounce ideas with colleagues (work related and otherwise). It is a very safe and open team environment.

Everyone's very welcoming and inclusive. It's easy to make friends and organise drinks or lunches.

Due to high levels of retrenchment & outsourcing within the organisation the large percentage of on-shore employees are extremely reluctant to share any experience/knowledge with graduates/new employees out of fear of making themselves less valuable. There is extremely poor management within the networks/engineering sectors of the organisation and noticeably large age gaps between staff, leading to poor social interactivity

Teams I have worked in value contributions of all members, with positive experiences of cooperation, with hierarchy not impacting work.
Graduate, Canberra - 22 Jan 2020
The area I work in has a very inclusive and supportive culture with a lot of genuine people willing to help. Teamwork and cooperation are great in both different teams I have been in.

Culture here is good, however due to lots of people working from home regular I think it takes away from the in-office culture as often it can be pretty quiet in the office. After hours culture is okay, with occasional events but I think it can be improved.

Supportive of grads, can be pretty tough / competitive with restructures.

Flexible working and being able to work at your own hours is very helpful. Many people will either go to work early and finish up earlier. Or vice versa. In terms of structure and hierarchy, the Legal team operates with a flat structure. Junior members of the team can work with more senior members and the culture is quite transparent.

Each team, from what I've seen, works well on its own, and generally gets along quite well with teams that are adjacent to it; this co-operation gets worse between teams with different work, with personal connections sometimes required to get things done quickly. The people are friendly and sociable, so there's a lot of opportunity to build up your personal network. Depending on the team, there are after-hours events, and there are plenty of these with the grad program as well. There are a fair number of people who you will need to work with who will be located remotely, so there are lots of phone and video calls.

People respect everyone. No one is left out

Some of the company can be a little bitter at the changes but overall the company is a nice place to work

Overall good, particularly in the grad community. Culture of silos, red tape, and exhausting processes in the rest of the company is slowly going away but still alive and well

This is changing, in the past the hierarchy was everything, but we are moving to a more collaborative way of working. Good social culture from the Grad program.

Of the two teams I have been in, they have both been very inclusive, and non-egocentric. Everyone is treated as an equal and everyone's opinion is heard. Outside of office hours, drinks are held every Friday night for us graduates to blow off steam and the team that you're in will also have functions from time to time.

Hierarchy is present however there is no issue in speaking to an exec as a graduate. The ability to work from home & flexibly is very useful however be prepared for afterhours emails.
