Cannington is one of the world's largest and lowest-cost producers of silver and lead.  Located in northwest Queensland, Cannington boasts an underground mine and processing facility situated approximately 800 kilometres west of Townsville and a concentrate handling facility at the Port of Townsville.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Operations Engineer, the purpose of this role is to analyse and benchmark the Operations Engineering end-to-end performance and identify and implement improvement initiatives that enable functional excellence and support business priorities for continuous improvement. Note that this is an entry level role and is not part of the South32 Graduate program. Other responsibilities include:

  • Conducts compliance checks to verify adherence to procedures
  • Monitors and reports on weekly and monthly operational compliance
  • Monitors execution of the week 0 schedule to drive compliance
  • Analyses and determines equipment capability assumptions
  • Performs analysis of performance of technical processes and/or work processes
  • Identifies functional capability gaps
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and works with Productions teams to execute these initiatives
  • Provides feedback to the Planning function to improve future execution plans, designs, schedules and forecasts
  • Updates operating standards, procedures, work instructions and control systems and ensures critical controls exist and are effective

About You

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering or equivalent, ideally with operational experience but would suit graduate
  • Willingness to work in a Hard Rock Underground Mine
  • Attention to detail
  • Analytical, disciplined and methodical in daily tasks
  • Collaborative communications across all levels of the organisation

Pros

  • Flexibility to choose your own career path, support to follow that direction. A variety of different roles within a graduate program. The people I work with are the best.

  • Opportunity to work in different areas and enabled to pursue interests aligned to your career goals and personal values.

  • Flexibility, I enjoyed the people I work with.

  • Good environment. Most inclusive mine that I've experienced. Employees seem to have a happy home and healthy relationships.

  • Company values, colleagues, exposure to interesting projects, company direction at an executive level.

Cons

    • The graduate program continues to grow, towards the beginning of my employment there was little structure, although this is improving.

    • The lack of diversity in age and cultural background.

    • It would be good to talk to more people who have just gone through/going through the grad program.

    • Often work overtime (more like shift work) and don't get paid for it.

    • Travel for work (long hours), salary is low compared with peers.
