2020 John Holland Graduate Program – Sustainability and Environment
Locations: NSW, QLD and VIC

At John Holland we are about finding solutions to complex challenges and opportunities. We work across sectors from infrastructure and property development to rail and building, all with the purpose of benefiting communities and transforming lives.

Transforming lives doesn't just apply to our projects – it is why we are committed to giving graduates a foot in the door of this exciting industry, where every day is a chance to make our cities and communities better.

The Graduate Program is structured around building your abilities through rotations, learning and development opportunities and support. We work in both metropolitan and regional areas, creating projects that make communities more connected, grow the economy and improve quality of life. To learn and grow as much as possible during your time on the program it is essential that you are prepared to relocate.

As a Sustainability & Environment Graduate you could be involved in the implementation of project environment and sustainability programs to ensure adherence with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, contractual obligations, sustainability requirements and HSE procedures.

The opportunity will involve frequent surveillance on site to ensure that all environmental obligations are implemented and maintained. You will be providing advice and guidance to key project teams including design, construction, commercial, and operations in relation to sustainability requirements. You will support and champion a culture of thinking across the project and John Holland to help achieve the sustainability, environmental, social, financial and governance goals of our customers and communities.

We understand that our greatest resource is our people. We pride ourselves on being a market leader in targeting training, career development and remuneration. We provide long-term career options within an equal opportunity workplace where we recognise the importance of flexibility and a healthy work-life balance.

It's an exciting time for us, with billions of dollars of work to deliver. We need the right people with the right attitude to help us succeed.

Pros and cons of working at John Holland

Pros

  • Great company culture, looking after employees

  • Diversity of work and great colleagues.

  • The wide range of experience / different activities I have received on the one project.

  • A lot of experience, knowledge to be gained. Learning on the job Great graduate program with dedicated courses, learning modules and networking events.

  • Salary package is very attractive.

  • Working on Projects in different States. Being able to work across multiple engineering disciplines.

Cons

    • Long working hours and lack of knowledge sharing.

    • The failure to be rotated through the graduate program to experience different projects. The lack of acknowledgement from John Holland for the hours and time committed to the job.

    • The lack of focus on emerging technologies

    • Some graduates were not allowed to rotate as often as stated in their graduate program brochure (6 months per rotation) Quality of teams differs from project to project

    • Working for a rail business means there is a need for night shifts, weekend shifts and long periods of long shifts. It is not all the time, but it is also not a rare occurrence.

    • Could be pigeon-holed or just become a number.
