John Holland is a fully integrated infrastructure and property group. Operating across Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia, we have been transforming city skylines, connecting regional centres and providing vital infrastructure for more than six decades. We are committed to being recognised by our employees, customers and other stakeholders as an industry leader in environmental management across the diverse projects to deliver sustainable solutions. The Infrastructure Group comprises specialised engineering, design and construction capability across a broad range of sectors and for projects of varying sizes. Our expertise in infrastructure has spanned more than 2,500 projects in Australia alone, for both public and private entities. We also have a long history of delivering projects in international markets, most notably across South East Asia and New Zealand.

Our John Holland Global Graduate Program provides an opportunity to gain well-rounded experience both in technical and soft skills, whilst working for one of Australia's leading and most diverse engineering, construction and services providers. We are proud that many of our past graduates are now in various senior roles throughout the business and we look forward to developing the next leader in you.

Throughout the two-year program you will be supported through soft skills development, on-the-job experience and training, and opportunities to build lasting relationships with senior leaders representing John Holland's diverse operations. Our projects are located in both metropolitan and regional areas, so it is essential that you are prepared to relocate if required.

As a Graduate Mechanical or Electrical Engineer within the Infrastructure discipline, you will have the opportunity to work on projects from sectors such as Transport Infrastructure, Tunnels and Utilities. The role will see you working onsite where you will be involved in mechanical and electrical packages of works. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work alongside with the construction project teams and delivering a package of work in accordance with project specifications, whilst ensuring the activities of subcontractors and suppliers are completed within set schedules and costs. This will involve procuring materials and services that comply with specifications, drawings and environment standards, and understanding how to measure plan costs, efficiencies, yields and quality of product as directed. You will also develop the ability to read and understand plans, review design documentation to provide constructability review and implement final plans.

We understand that our greatest resource is our people. We pride ourselves on being a market leader in targeting training, career development and remuneration. We provide long-term career options within an equal opportunity workplace where we recognise the importance of flexibility and a healthy work-life balance.
It's an exciting time for us, with billions of dollars of work to deliver. We need the right people with the right attitude to help us succeed.

Pros and cons of working at John Holland

Pros

  • Great company culture, looking after employees

  • Diversity of work and great colleagues.

  • The wide range of experience / different activities I have received on the one project.

  • A lot of experience, knowledge to be gained. Learning on the job Great graduate program with dedicated courses, learning modules and networking events.

  • Salary package is very attractive.

  • Working on Projects in different States. Being able to work across multiple engineering disciplines.

Cons

    • Long working hours and lack of knowledge sharing.

    • The failure to be rotated through the graduate program to experience different projects. The lack of acknowledgement from John Holland for the hours and time committed to the job.

    • The lack of focus on emerging technologies

    • Some graduates were not allowed to rotate as often as stated in their graduate program brochure (6 months per rotation) Quality of teams differs from project to project

    • Working for a rail business means there is a need for night shifts, weekend shifts and long periods of long shifts. It is not all the time, but it is also not a rare occurrence.

    • Could be pigeon-holed or just become a number.
