Pathway Highlights:

  • A three day familiarisation tour where you will visit Navy, Army and Air Force bases to meet with Australian Defence Force members and interact with military equipment;
  • Senior Officer Briefs where you will meet with Defence’s senior leaders, including the Chief of the Defence Force and Secretary of Defence, to discuss Defence’s strategic objective, graduate career management and the senior officer’s personal insights;
  • Rotation specific training to provide you with the skills and knowledge to undertake reward, exciting and challenging work;
  • Meetings with the Graduate Management Team and your experience supervisor to discuss your learning and development needs, career aspirations and performance feedback; and
  • A dedicated Graduate Management Team who will guide and advise you throughout your program.

The Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group provides impartial scientific advice and innovative technology solutions to create and maintain Australia’s defence and national security capability edge.

With world class research facilities across Australia, DST Group delivers scientific support to Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations, advises government on Defence acquisitions, applies technologies to sustain current capabilities, and undertakes cutting edge research to safeguard Australia against future Defence and national security challenges.

Defence Science and Technology Group offers a 12-month graduate program consisting of two rotations across Major Science and Technology Capability areas within DST Group or more broadly in Defence. Applicants must have completed at a minimum a relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics honours degree within the last 2 years and want to further develop their research skills through a PhD supported by DST Group.

DST Group is seeking applications from Honours graduates in the following career Stream:

  • Research and Innovation Stream: Cyber/ Computer Sciences, Electronic/ Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Material Science, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nutrition/ Biological/ Chemistry sciences, Psychology/ Social Sciences

Depending on your degree, Research and Innovation Stream graduates can expect to work on a number of cutting edge, challenging and varied roles including:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning
  • Cyber Security Data Research
  • Software and security systems
  • Autonomous systems
  • Space systems
  • Data Analytics
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Radar and sonar systems   
  • Human Factors and Performance

Quick Details

  • Salary: APS 4; $67,100 pa + 15.4% superannuation. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will commence to $73,256 pa + 15.4% superannuation.
  • Program: 12 months – 2 rotations
  • Eligibility: Australian Citizen only
  • Location: Various across Australia
