The Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) is Australia’s national weather, climate and water information agency. The Bureau provides a wide range of products and services to support informed decision-making by governments, emergency services, industry and the community.  Bureau of Meteorology products and services include a dynamic range of observations, forecasts, warnings, analysis and advice covering Australia’s atmosphere, water, ocean and space environments.

Australian communities, governments and industries depend on the Bureau’s essential forecast, warning and information services to protect lives and property, support national security and environmental sustainability, promote industry productivity and enhance societal well-being.  Many economically important, weather-sensitive industries rely on the Bureau of Meteorology services for their own effective operation.  These include Emergency Services, Defence, Aviation, Shipping, Resources, Agriculture and Water.

Job Role

The Bureau of Meteorology is looking for graduates who will help us transform the way that we deliver products and services to the Australian community. Being a forecast meteorologist is about understanding the behaviour of the atmosphere and oceans, and its impacts on human activity. This includes analysing the state of the atmosphere and oceans, providing various forecasts and warning products on weather and climate, and communicating directly with a wide variety of clients.

As a Graduate Meteorologist, you will begin your career by undertaking a 9-month formal training course at the Bureau's Training Centre in Melbourne, commencing late January or early February 2019.

As you learn more about this fascinating field of scientific endeavour, you may have the opportunity to specialise in areas like:

• Severe Weather, including Thunderstorms, Fire Weather and Tropical Cyclones
• Tropical Meteorology
• Services to the Defence Forces
• Meteorological and Oceanographic Analysis
• Services to the Aviation Industry
• Meteorological advisory and interpretation services to emergency services and other specialised agencies.

Course graduation is followed by advancement as a forecast meteorologist; with a posting to either our National Operations Centre in Melbourne or our Regional Offices in capital cities dependent on operational needs, therefore you must be willing to relocate.

Weather Forecasting is a 24/7 operational requirement therefore you will need the willingness to perform shift work on a rotating roster.
