On successful completion of the graduate program, you’ll advance to the next classification level, an APS 4. Towards the end of your 12 month program, the ANAO will also support you in obtaining relevant postgraduate qualifications such as your CA or CPA, including maintaining current membership to professional bodies and associations relevant to your career.

Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking graduates from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. The most sought after degrees for each of our groups include:

  • AASG: Accounting, Economics and Commerce.
  • PASG: almost any degree. Your skills are what count here—for example, research, analysis, written communication and project management.
  • SADA: Data Analytics, Business Informatics, Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Business Information Systems and IT Security related disciplines. Candidates from Accounting/Commerce academic backgrounds, especially when combined with an IT discipline, would also be highly regarded.
  • PSRG: Accounting, Commerce, Economics, Public Policy and Law.
  • CMG: Human Resources, Finance, Communication, Business and IT.

If you’re applying, it's also important that you:

  • have strong communication skills
  • have the ability to write clearly and concisely
  • are a self-starter
  • have well-developed conceptual and analytical abilities; and
  • are an achiever with a strong sense of purpose.

Eligibility

To be eligible for our graduate program, you must:

  • have completed a qualification equivalent to a three-year Australian undergraduate degree in the last seven years, or complete the degree in 2019
  • be a current Australian citizen
  • be prepared to undertake a security clearance process
  • be willing to relocate to Canberra.

Position locations

All graduate positions are located in Canberra, ACT. We provide relocation assistance if you need to move from interstate.

Pros and cons of working at Australian National Audit Office (ANAO)

Pros

  • Great access to training, work related to my area of study, emphasis on high achievement, flexible hours.

  • The unique type of work we do, the clients, the environment and probably its size.

  • Being given autonomy to do my work independently, with supervision whenever I need it.

  • The content of the work and the workplace culture- the work is interesting and engaging, I am granted quite a lot of autonomy and responsibility, and all my colleagues are very supportive of my learning and development.

  • The interesting work that we do.

Cons

    • Can be stressful at times.

    • The emphasis on getting every piece of detail perfect. We are auditors after all, so its pretty much what we do!

    • Resourcing- there is potential for better integration between service groups and there is currently an imbalance in the relative workloads of each. This results in some employees being overworked while the skills and availability of other employees are not utilised as much as they could be. The organisation is currently working to address this.

    • Only one office in Canberra - nothing in other states.

    • Limited to scope to undertake and publish personal research.
