Throughout your career you will have the opportunity to support Army domestic activities, including exercises and operations, with potential deployments overseas in support of Australian and coalition personnel.

Your Role

Maintaining the good health and fitness of personnel is a major priority in the Army, and this includes their psychological wellbeing. As an Army Psychologist your duties could include:

  • Post-operational screening
  • Counselling of soldiers
  • Critical incident health support
  • Clinical assessments and intervention
  • Occupational analysis
  • Personnel management advice, and
  • The provision of support to deployed troops.

Initially however you can expect to be employed in areas such as selection interviewing, assessing the potential of candidates and their suitability for Army life and work.

Salary

  • Fully-paid training

Location

Upon completion of your university studies, complete military training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in the ACT, followed by initial employment training requirements at Albury/Wodonga – posting locations could be any Army base location in Australia.

Entry Requirements

  • Aged 17 to 56
  • Australian Citizen
  • Applicants must have completed an APS approved Psychology undergraduate degree and be accepted or be in the process of applying for a Masters course (ideally a 2 year course or alternatively the 5+1 pathway)

Security Clearance: Negative Vetting 1. The Department of Defence requires all ADF entrants to obtain a security clearance appropriate to their avenue of entry.

A process of background checks, collection of relevant information and, as required, interviews enables the Regional Security Office to make an informed assessment of an applicant’s suitability for a security clearance.

Current policy requires applicants for this particular avenue of entry to have lived in Australia for the preceding 10 years, or have a checkable background for this period. Waivers may be considered.
