The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting Data Graduates on behalf of other Australian Public Service (APS) agencies, such as:

  • Australian Bureau of Statistics
  • Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
  • Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
  • Australian Public Services Commission
  • Department of Education, Skills and Employment
  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Department of Social Services
  • National Indigenous Australians Agency
  • Safe Work Australia

Data Graduate roles support evidence-based, informed decision making, and work across all aspects of government such as policy development, program management and service delivery. Data Graduate roles cover the full data lifecycle including survey and questionnaire development, data acquisition, data engineering and data analysis, as well as more specialised streams such as data science, methodology, Geospatial analysis and data management.

For our 2021 graduate program we will recruit graduates for a range of job roles within the APS Data Graduate stream, for example:

  • Data Analyst
  • Data Scientist
  • Statistical Methodology Specialist

APS graduate programs provide practical on-the-job training through team-based work or projects. The program is designed to:

  • assist you to transition into the Australian Public Service
  • provide you with tailored training and development opportunities
  • gain experience with the core business of your APS agency
  • improve your understanding of and gain experience in project management
  • develop your skills to effectively contribute to the strategic direction of your APS agency.

We are looking for highly motivated graduates from a wide array of disciplines and life experiences, who want to play a part in shaping Australia's future and informing the decision-making process.

Cons

    • Career advancement opportunities are lacking.

    • Sometimes the 'hot desking' set up can be distracting. But it's not always so.

    • Restrictions involving bureaucracy/red tape. Current difficulties caused by adjustments to decreasing budget.

    • The tall hierarchy which limits an individual's agency and ability to work independently.

    • head office in another city, meaning that work opportunities in my office can be limited.
