Although research undertaken by the Australian Institute of Geoscientists shows that employment prospects for geologists are slowly improving, there are still significant numbers either unemployed or underemployed.

As such, graduates should consider jobs that are related to, but not specific to, geology. The following companies have internships/graduate programs that would be relevant. Closing dates vary, so make sure you check but keep in mind that closing dates for these can be as early as August for the following year start:

  • BP Australia
  • Caltex
  • BHP Billiton
  • Schlumberger

The Geoscience Australia Graduate Program, an initiative of the Australian government, is an excellent option for those who hold an Honours degree related to Earth-Science. Applications open in March/April of each year. You can register on their website to receive an alert to make sure you don’t miss the closing date.

Universities also employ graduates to undertake research, so make sure you check out the website of the universities local to where you intend to reside.

Competitiveness

Competition for graduate roles specific to geology will be high and geology graduates should consider related positions.

Location

Almost half the employment opportunities for geologists and geophysicists are in Western Australia. Other notable locations include Queensland and Victoria.
